Argentinean Women’s Rights Activist Monique Altschul Awarded Dignity Prize

Monique Altschul, head of the Women and Equality Foundation, was recently honored by the Permanent Assembly of Human Rights in Argentina for her work on women’s rights and corruption in the state. Supported in part by UNIFEM and UNDEF (United Nations Democracy Fund), Altschul and her foundation “organizes women against corruption…[through] groundbreaking attempts to monitor election financing for male and female political candidates in Argentina,” as UNIFEM reports.

In an nationwide public awareness-raising campaign, Altschul “highlighted the gender dimensions of corruption and called for greater access to public information.” With a network that spans eight provinces, the Women and Equality Foundation tracks public spending and compliance with laws that relate to gender equality. The determined efforts of Altschul and her team have resulted in increased awareness and responsiveness by public officials, particularly concerning laws that protect women from gender-based violence and hostile working conditions.
