Queen Rania Al Abdullah’s Take on Investing in Girls
In a recent Daily Beast Op-Ed, Queen Rania Al Abdullah of Jordan reinforces that there is a single method that will improve global issues such as human trafficking, poverty, and economic crisis: investing in girls.
She points to the rights young girls around the world are not afforded, including official identification such as birth certificates that would allow access to school, voting, and public services.
The effects are evident. Queen Rania Al Abdullah writes, “The majority of the world’s 130 million illiterate youth are girls. In sub-Saharan Africa, 122 million girls live on less than $1 a day. And nearly half of all sexual assaults worldwide are against girls aged 15 and younger.”
As a board member of the United Nations Foundation, Queen Abdullah works to raise awareness and provide resources to girls in need.
